Pocketing one of ur opponent is balls can be a very effective defensive strategy. Of course, if u contact one of ur opponent is balls first, it is a foul & ball in hand is awarded to them. Still, that is not always a terrible thing. Even if they have ball in hand, perhaps u removed the only ball they had on the table that was not frozen or snookered. Now the onus is on them to break up clusters. Make them do the work. Taking ur opponent is balls off the table can greatly benefit u by getting obstacles out of ur way for later in the game & by removing key balls that ur opponent would use to run out the table.
